Luau Wedding Decorating Ideas

Leis are a beautiful touch for any luau-themed wedding.

A luau is a uniquely Hawaiian feast, featuring lots of family and friends, large amounts of good food and plenty of music. In short, almost everything you want your wedding to be. Add a little romance with some decorative touches inspired by the beautiful Hawaiian beaches, and you will have a wedding that is fun, festive and memorable.

Tiki Torches

Tiki torches conjure up images of tropical islands, and their flickering flames will add a bit of mystery and romance to your luau wedding. String tiny white lights between each torch to create a border around the bride and groom, or to line the aisle. Or, tie a bouquet of flowers to each torch.

Leis

Leis are a must when it comes to planning a Hawaiian wedding. Drape them on tables, around the guest book, and over your wedding cake. Have the bridesmaids wear leis instead of carrying bouquets. Give leis to special guests, such as the mother of the bride and groom, to wear also.

Shells

Evoke a soothing and romantic feeling of being at the ocean, even if you aren't, by filling jars with sand and seashells. Use tall, slender glass tubes, or round bowls with a candle placed in the center of the sand and shells. Add a tropical blossom or two for a colorful touch if the sand and shells are a bit too bland for your tastes. Tie ribbons to shells and hang them from the corners of tables or even from an archway.

Fun Touches

For a casual, fun wedding, try skirting each buffet table with grass skirts. Hang a grass curtain on one or more of the doors as well. Blown-up beach balls make great substitutes for balloons, and colorful sunglasses add a touch of whimsy to table centerpieces. If you're really feeling adventures, place maracas on each table at the reception, and tell the bride and groom that they have to kiss whenever someone shakes the maracas.
