Pool Party Cake Ideas

Use blue gelatin for the pool water.

Create a pool party cake from a box of cake mix and sweet treat accessories. These pool cake ideas are easy to create with just a little bit of extra time spent on the details. Get creative and make a pool-themed cake that is as much fun to design as it is to eat. Does this Spark an idea?

Gelatin Pool Cakes

Bake two cakes of the same size and shape, according to the directions on the box. This can be round, square or rectangular, depending on the shape and style of pool cake you wish to create. Allow cakes to cool. Assemble the cakes to form a two-layer cake. Carefully cut out the pool shape from the center of the top cake layer, leaving an outer rim to serve as the pool deck or platform. Prepare two packages of blue gelatin, according to package directions. Refrigerate gelatin until it starts to become thick and pour into the center of the cake. Refrigerate cake until gelatin is set. Frost remaining cake with the color of frosting desired for the outer rim and deck of the pool. Mix food coloring and white icing to create colors. Accessorize with candy, such as teddy bear graham cookies, life savers or fruit strip rafts and wafer cookie diving boards.

Ladder and Slide Cake

Bake a two-layer round cake as per the instructions on the box. Frost the sides and a 3" outer rim on the top of the cake with white icing. Frost the center of the cake with blue icing. Cover a wafer cone with white frosting and place upside down on the white part of the top of the cake. Run a blue fruit strip slide from the top of the wafer into the pool section. Assemble a ladder out of pretzel sticks. Use whole sticks as the vertical rails. Cut more pretzel sticks in half to serve as the rungs. Attach rungs to rails with frosting. Place ladder next to wafer cone so that the bottom stands in the white frosting and the top leans against the wafer cone's platform. Stick teddy bear crackers to look as if they are climbing the ladder, waiting on the wafer platform, sliding down the slide and floating in the pool.

Flip-Flops Cake

Create an adorable pair of flip-flops for the pool party cake. Bake a 9x13 rectangular cake as directed on box. Cut cooled cake into the shape of two flip-flops. Use food coloring to tint white frosting to desired color of flip flops and frost. Assemble fruit strips on cake to form the straps. Decorate with colored candy embellishments and designs created with writing icing.

Pool Party Cupcakes

Try individual pool-themed cupcakes instead of a large cake design. Line cupcake pans with blue paper liners. Prepare batter, pour into cake liners and bake as directed. Top the cupcakes with blue frosting. Flatten gumdrops with a rolling pin and mold into the shape of round pool tubes. Place a graham cracker teddy bear in each of the pool tubes and sit atop cupcakes. Stake a paper cocktail umbrella in the frosting so that the bear in the tube "floats" under the umbrella.
