Weddings are a day to celebrate love and the commitment that two people are making to one another for the rest of their lives. Everyone wants his or her wedding to be special, and there are several ways to make your big day stand out.
Christmas Wedding
A couple who has always loved the Christmas season may enjoy planning their wedding to occur on or around Dec. 25. The bride can wear a traditional white wedding dress, but might pair it with a faux fur muff or a beautifully adorned white coat. Keep the decorations in the Christmas spirit by using poinsettias as the flowers and decorating the tables at the reception with red and green candles by pine cones or twigs of holly. You could even choose a favorite Christmas song as your wedding march. Ask the guests to dress in the Christmas spirit as well to keep the festivities that much more seasonal.
Hawaiian Luau Wedding
You do not have to have a Hawaiian wedding budget or live in a tropical climate to throw a luau wedding. The affair can be held at the beach or any other sunny location. The bride could wear a simple white dress and the groom could keep his look casual by sporting a Hawaiian shirt and a pair of khaki pants. Give everyone who comes to the affair a lei and play traditional Hawaiian music for the bride as she comes down the aisle. Decorate the wedding reception with tiki torches and Hawaiian flowers and serve tropical fruits such as mangoes and pineapples. You may even go so far as roasting a pig or hiring traditional Hawaiian fire dancers for the reception.
Nautical Wedding
Boat enthusiasts may want to hold their wedding at sea. A local yacht club or a yacht itself can be rented for the nuptials and the reception. The bride can dress in a more casual white dress accented with traditional nautical colors, such as navy blue. The groom and his party can wear navy blue button-up shirts and khaki pants. Decorate the hall with nautical-themed items such as lighthouses and birds, and use fish bowls filled with beach sand as centerpieces on the tables. The theme of the food could also be nautical by serving the couple's favorite seafood dishes, such as lobster, trout or anything that comes from the ocean. You may even consider choosing a wedding cake fashioned in the shape of an anchor.
Pirate Theme Wedding
Dress the wedding party in traditional pirate gear. The women could wear "wench" dresses in different colors, while the men could dress in flowing shirts, eye patches and knee-high leather boots. The ceremony could be held on the beach or on a "pirate" ship, if there is an antique boat rental company in your area. The reception could be pirate themed by decorating a hall with treasure chests, candles and netting draped over all the tables. Don't forget to give everyone at the reception an eye patch and a cup of wine to celebrate the new couple.
Masquerade
Throw a masquerade ball for your wedding. Dress the wedding party in Renaissance-theme ball gowns and tuxedos of luxurious colors such as burgundy, gold and deep blue. For the reception, decorate the entire hall with several candles and give each of the guests a mask. The masks can be suited for each particular guest, or you could purchase several generic masks and allow each guest to decorate his or her own. Play classical music, and encourage your guests to don their masks and dance in the candlelight.
