Pick a unique theme for your pool party
Pool parties help to celebrate any special occasion in the summer. If you're planning on having friends and family over to spend a day by the pool, make your party even more exciting and entertaining by choosing a theme you can plan your menu and group games around. Does this Spark an idea?
Pirate Theme
Invite your guests to a pirate pool party by sending out treasure maps as invitations, with an X marking the spot on your house. Most party favor and craft stores will offer plenty of pirate flag and ship decorations to help set the mood. For a game for both kids and adults, fill a box with gold foil-wrapped chocolate coins and hide it in the yard, then encourage guests to search for the "buried treasure." Create a pirate ship fruit salad by hollowing half a watermelon, filling it with fruit and adding a pirate flag, or even decorating the outside of the gourd. Kabobs served on "pirate swords" and mugs of cold root beer will also fit the pirate pool theme.
Beach Sports Theme
For guests that want to do more than just lounge by the pool, set up a sports tournament with games like volleyball, frisbee and swimming relay races. Set the mood with an old surf board used as a table for the food, lots of brightly colored beach balls, and beach umbrellas for guests to sit underneath when they need a few minutes out of the sun. Playing sports works up an appetite, and grilled meats and seafood, along with a variety of fruit and salads, make an ideal menu for a sports party.
Luau Theme
The luau is possibly the most classic theme for a pool party, and can be made either casual or classy. Tiki torches, tropical patterned table clothes, hammocks and a lei for each guest will help set the mood, as will fruity drinks like pina coladas and daquiris served in fake coconut shells. Shrimp, fish or lobster on the grill, along with some pineapple slices, make a great main course, or you can go all out and pit roast a pig or pork loin for a large party.
