Preschool Birthday Party Ideas

Adorable and full of spunk, preschoolers want what they want.

Throwing a successful birthday party for a preschool-aged child can be a challenge. Preschoolers are old enough to have opinions about things but are not always very reasonable about those opinions. To help prevent any unnecessary battles or meltdowns over birthday parties, it's smart to arm yourself with some reliable ideas for preschool birthday parties. Does this Spark an idea?

ABC Party

Preschoolers are learning the alphabet.

Preschoolers are learning new things every day, and they love to show off those accomplishments. One of the things that they're likely to be learning is the alphabet, so having an ABC party is a perfect way to allow them to showcase their new skills.

To create this simple party, use alphabet building blocks to decorate. Provide white paper table coverings, lots of crayons and washable markers, and let the children color on the tables. Put snacks out and label each snack with the letter that it starts with. Be sure to sing the alphabet song during the party, and let the kids play an alphabet sorting game. Give them a collection of items to put into piles based upon the first letter of each item's name.

Nursery Rhyme Party

Mother Goose provides perfect inspiration for a preschool birthday party.

Preschool-aged children are most confident and happy when they are surrounded by things that are familiar. Throwing your preschooler a nursery rhyme party works well because your child and his guests will be familiar with the rhymes and will enjoy seeing them brought to life. Use books with your child's favorite nursery rhymes in them to decorate your party, and enlist the help of some older children or other adults to each dress the part of a character from a favorite nursery rhyme. Have each character read his nursery rhyme to the children.

For activities, you can have your guests do a nursery rhyme obstacle course by jumping over the moon and a candlestick, and running away with a dish and a spoon.

Old McDonald Party

Little kids will love their time "on the farm."

Old McDonald had a farm and kids just love to be on it. Throwing a farm-themed party for a preschooler is an almost guaranteed success. Get some hay bales for your guests to sit on, and invite them all to come dressed up as their favorite farm animal or as farmers. Simple games like herding balloon sheep will keep them moving and laughing the whole time. Be sure to put a cardboard barn up and lead the kids in a round or two of "Old McDonald Had a Farm" to see how many different animals and sounds they can come up with.
