Round Cake Decorating Ideas & Photographs

Round Cake Decorating Ideas & Photographs

A round cake is a classic choice for any birthday celebration or special occasion. Round cakes can be single, double or triple layer, or stacked to form tall, elegant wedding cakes or topsy-turvy cakes. It's easy to pipe simple, flat designs on the surface of any round cake, and more advanced decorators can choose to coat round cakes with poured or rolled fondant and decorate the cakes with handmade fondant figures. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Decorate the Cake as a Round Object

It's easy to make and decorate a round cake in the style of an everyday round object, such as a basketball or a pizza. To do this, spread a thin layer of buttercream frosting on the top and sides of the cake with a flat spatula. Chill the cake briefly, then apply a thicker layer of buttercream in the same base color. To finish, add detailing and accents with alternate colors of buttercream, a thin, round decorating tip and a pastry bag. You can also put frosting in a zip-top plastic bag and snip off a tiny corner of the bag to pipe a design.

Stack Cakes and Decorate with a Pattern

Stack two to four layers of round cakes together, starting with the biggest layer at the bottom and ending with the smallest layer at the top. Each cake can be just a single layer or multiple layers to make the final product taller. If necessary, you can use dowels or skewers to support the structure and keep the cakes in place. Before stacking, coat each cake with rolled or poured fondant. Let the fondant firm slightly, then arrange the cakes as desired. Decorate by using cookie cutters, fondant cutters or a sharp knife to cut flower shapes from rolled fondant. Use small dabs of buttercream to affix the fondant flowers to the finished, stacked cakes.

Decorate With a Face Design

A young child might enjoy seeing a funny, colorful face on a birthday cake, and a round cake is a perfect shape for forming that design. Consider decorating your cake with a pirate's face, a clown's face or a face of another favorite character. To make a face cake, cover the surface and sides of the round cake with buttercream or fondant frosting. Use a piece of paper and a pencil to sketch out a rough version of the design you want, and assemble all the components and frosting colors you need. Form a pirate bandanna by using red or black fondant cut and laid across the cake. Red clown hair can be made by using a star tip and pastry bag to pipe elongated lines off the sides of the cake. Form a clown hat and details for any cake with small pieces of rolled fondant.
