The Best Free Activities On Maui

Some say visiting Maui is like experiencing heaven on earth.

Tedeschi Vineyards offers a free guided tour and wine tasting at its beautiful vineyard in Maui. Tedeschi is open seven days a week and offers tours three times a day. It is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day according to the Maui Wine website. The vineyard is located on the slope of a dormant Maui volcano and the drive alone is worth the trip. The area has rolling hills and beautiful scenic vistas of the surrounding countryside.

Hale Pa'ahao Prison


History buffs will enjoy a visit to Hale Pa'ahao Prison. It was established in the early 1850s according to the Hawaii website. The hard core prisoners were shipped to Oahu, but this site housed many villains who deserted ships, were reckless on their horses, or who violated religious convictions. Shackles and restraints were available to keep troublesome prisoners in control. Children and adults alike will enjoy the spooky history of this prison. The admission is free and they are open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Auntie Aloha's Hawaiian Hut


Auntie Aloha's Hawaiian Hut hosts a wide variety of local artist who demonstrate the local crafts and handiwork available in the area. Visitors can see a free hula show and receive a complimentary gift at 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. This craft mall has crafts and gifts ranging in price from very inexpensive to expensive and has specialty nuts native to the area, handcrafted items from Hawaiian dolls, homemade quilts and linens, to clocks made of shell and wood products. Classes are available for a small price for fun activities, such as making the lei necklaces, to playing the ukulele and learning hula dance.

Scenic Drive on the Road to Hana


Travelers can begin your journey to Hana at the quaint little town of Paia on the east side of Maui. The road is only 42 miles long, but allows plenty of time to shop and see all the points of interest along the way, including the Oheo gulch and the Wainapanapa State Park. Pack a picnic lunch, or carry lots of small bills, most flower and fruit stands along the way are based on the honor system where you just leave the money in the basket. You will see gorgeous seaside cliffs, beautiful waterfalls and lush guava trees and fern groves. The road has more than 600 turns and 54 scenic bridges to cross over. The entire family will enjoy this beautiful trip into the real Hawaii. Take the primary state route 36 to the secondary state route 360.
