Tiki parties
add tropical fun to your get-together.
Tiki parties are casual celebrations that center around the 1950s' American perception of Polynesian culture. They create an entertaining ambiance for a gathering of your friends where you get to wear Polynesian-themed clothing and treat yourself to some delicious, specialty food. The culinary treats that you choose for your tiki party can set the scene as much as the tiki torches and leis you'll want to set out. Does this Spark an idea?
Roasted Pig
If you want to do something dramatic, set out a whole roasted pig to feed your guests. Roast the pig yourself if you're particularly ambitious, or purchase one. Your nearest Asian grocery is an excellent source for this meal option.
Skewers
If you're going to be grilling, toss some skewered appetizers on the rack. Cut up chunks of meat, vegetables and pork, push them onto skewers and grill them for your guests. Skip the meat for your vegetarian friends and add fruit to the skewered veggie mix. Lay down a layer of aluminum foil so that meat grease doesn't get cooked into the fruit and vegetables.
Fresh Fruit
Tiki parties celebrate all things tropical, so put out bowls of fresh fruit. Pineapple and melons are a great place to start, but don't let it end there. Jackfruit, papaya, mango and lychee all suit the theme. Cut up the fruit into bite-sized pieces and serve it in a bowl mixed with ice for a frosty treat.
Ginger Stir Fry
Stir frying is a fast way to prepare a large amount of food very quickly; it's also a good choice for members of your party who are not fond of the heavy taste of roasted meat. Stir fry vegetables using a pre-made ginger paste or even whole slices of fresh ginger. Stalks of lemongrass add a tropical element to the stir fry.
Pie
Dessert is an important part of the tiki party, and finding the right pie at the grocery store or making it yourself is easy. Key lime pie is a good choice, as is coconut cream pie. Banana cream pie and pineapple upside down cake also suit your theme party and tend to please most palates.
