Tropical Backyard Ideas

Transforming a plain backyard into a tropical paradise creates a relaxing oasis for entertaining or relaxing any day of the week. This backyard retreat encompasses the decorative elements of a tropical island. The space available dictates the specific elements that will fit into the yard. Many of the elements can be scaled down to fit a smaller space. Does this Spark an idea?

Bamboo Fencing

Bamboo grows much faster than traditional hardwoods, and it begins regrowing as soon as it is cut down, making it a better choice for the environment. Bamboo fencing defines the backyard space while creating a tropical barrier for privacy. It comes in a variety of styles to accommodate your personal taste. Bamboo fences work well to surround the entire backyard, separate it into defined areas or provide privacy for a pool or hot tub.

Tropical Plants

Tropical plants carry the theme throughout the backyard. Palm trees remain a classic image of tropical climates. Many varieties of palm trees exist, with different sizes and heights available. Some palm trees also tolerate colder climates. Additional plants with a tropical feel work well in flower beds and around landscape features. Ferns, hosta, bird of paradise, bougainvillea and other lush plants exude the desired feeling. The planting conditions for the greenery varies, making some environments more appropriate than others for the plants.

Ground Cover

Ground cover with a tropical theme provides material for pathways or other areas in the yard. Sand creates a tropical beach feel and defines a play area for kids. Crushed rock or oyster shells provide another option for a tropical ground covering. In addition to creating pathways around the backyard, these materials work well as fillers around plants in place of traditional mulch or wood chips.

Water Feature

A water feature including a waterfall offers another tropical backyard decoration. Water features typically include a small pond into which the waterfall runs. A corner of the yard works well for the water feature, to avoid consuming a large usable section of the yard. Pond and waterfall kits simplify this landscape project. Large rocks and tropical plants placed near the water feature add to the theme.

Finishing Touches

Finishing touches to the backyard complete the tropical look. Patio furniture with a tropical tone is an ideal choice for seating areas. Tropical fabrics on the cushions transform any patio furniture to fit the theme. Tiki torches, large sea shells, thatched umbrellas and tiki statues provide additional decorative accents for the yard. A backyard bar with a tropical theme adds an entertaining element for parties.
