Tropical Birthday Party Activities For Kids

A tropical-themed pinata is an entertaining party activity.

Tropical-themed birthday parties are a fun and colorful way to celebrate a child's birthday. A tropical birthday theme is perfect for an outdoor pool or beach party during the summer months, or as a way to brighten up an indoor winter party. Include tropical food, luau decorations and tropical party activities to keep kids entertained. Does this Spark an idea?

Limbo

A limbo contest is an easy activity for a tropical birthday party for kids. Make your own limbo stick by using a broom or mop handle and wrapping it in colorful crepe paper. Have two adults on hand who can hold the limbo stick and lower it slightly each round. Play some tropical luau music and let each guest take turns trying to see how low they can go. Hand out small prizes to the winners.

Hula Hoop Contest

Another kid-friendly activity for a tropical-themed party is a contest to see who can hula hoop the longest. If you don't want to go through the hassle of buying enough hula hoops for every child in attendance, just buy two and have the kids face off two at a time. Alternatively, buy one hoop and see who can keep it going the longest by timing the kids with a stopwatch. Let the winner of the contest take home the hula hoop as a prize.

Tropical Lei Craft

No tropical party would be complete without colorful flowered leis. Help the kids create their own handmade leis to wear for the party. Prior to the party, cut out flowers from colored paper and punch holes in the middle. You can substitute paper flowers for foam craft flowers or silk flowers. Cut up 1-inch pieces of colored drinking straws. Help the kids bead the straws and the paper flowers onto some yarn and then tie it together to create a flowered lei.

Tropical Pinata

Purchase a pinata from a party store in a fun tropical theme, such as a palm tree, pineapple, parrot or tiki. Fill the pinata with candy and small tropical themed toys like plastic tiki rings and plastic sea creatures. If you play limbo before hand, your limbo stick can double as a pinata stick. Starting with the birthday boy or girl let each child have a chance to be blindfolded and take a few whacks at the pinata. Be sure to play pinata in an area cleared of obstructions as kids can get hurt during the mad dash for the goodies.
