Things To Do In Honolulu In October

You'll find plenty of activities in Honolulu during the month of October.

If you are traveling to Honolulu, Hawaii in the month of October, you'll find more to do besides surfing, sunning or sightseeing. In October, the city of Honolulu celebrates its culture, its film, its sports, and, of course, Halloween. Halloween in Honolulu is a unique experience with not only haunted houses to explore, but also street festivals celebrating the season. You'll also find international tournaments for the sport of rugby, beach triathlon and a beach ironman competition.

Kava Festival

Known locally in Hawaii as the 'Awa Festival, the Kava Festival celebrates the Hawaiian culture and the culture of the Pacific Islands' people. The 'awa plant is a fundamental aspect of the Hawaiian culture and is celebrated through a one-day festival featuring live local music, exhibits and booths promoting local culture, and 'awa sampling, 'awa plants, 'apu making workshop, preparation demos and pa'i'ai/poi pounding. Some of Hawaii's 'awa cafes will also serve to the public. The festival is held annually on the University of Hawaii Manoa main campus on the McCarthy Mall. In 2010, the date is Saturday, Oct. 9. Admission is free and the festival runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Halloween in Honolulu

Celebrating Halloween in Honolulu involves more than your average costume party. You can visit a haunted plantation at the Hawaii's Plantation Village Indoor-Outdoor Museum in Waipahu, or take a haunted lagoon canoe ride at the Polynesian Cultural Center. In 2009, the canoe rides were held each Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday night throughout the month leading up to Halloween. You can also find a haunted village at the Hokulani Imaginarium on the campus of Windward Community College in Kaneohe, East Oahu. If you are in Honolulu on Halloween night, take in a street festival at both the downtown arts district or on the streets of Waikiki. The downtown street celebration is geared toward children while the Waikiki festival is adult-themed as costumed revelers parade through the streets surrounding some of Honolulu's night clubs and bars on Kalakaua and Kuhio Avenues.

Hawaii International Film Festival

If you are a film buff, the Hawaii International Film Festival is held during several weeks in the month of October. First held in 1981, this festival features an exhibition of Asian and Pacific feature and short films as well as documentaries and is considered to be the most important film event in the Pacific region. In 2010, the HIFF will be held between October 14 and October 24 throughout several venues including the Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18, Sunset on the Beach, the Hawaii Theatre Center and the Royal Hawaiian Theater. Stretching over 11 days, past festivals have featured over 150 films, seminars about filmmaking, and interviews with the stars and filmmakers.
