Things To Do On Maui For Free

Going to Maui doesn't have to break your budget. There are thousands of free and low-budget activities throughout Maui that you could not enjoy at home. This article covers some of the best free activities throughout Maui.

Jump In!

If you believe that the best things in life are free---and many vacationers do these days---you won't have any trouble entertaining yourself in Maui. One website boasts that you could entertain yourself for a month in Maui without spending a penny.

Most notably, Maui is full of swimming and snorkeling possibilities---and all beaches are free and open to the public. Don't miss the curved, sandy shore of Kapalua Beach, rated the best beach in the United States by the University of Maryland's Coastal Research Lab. Check out Baby Beach for large enclosed shallows where kids and adults can safely wade. If you are looking for a novel experience, take a swim with the turtles at Maluaka Bay.

Take a Look

For a relaxed afternoon, take a picnic lunch to Hookipa Park, the site of the world windsurfing championships. The colorful sails cresting the waves will take your breath away.

If you are in Maui between November 15 and April 15, you may be able to see some humpback whales breaching. For a great view, pull off the road at the Pali turnoff on the way to Lahaina. For many people, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Make a trip into Hawaii's rich world of legend at the Waianapanapa Caves. In these caves, legend says, Princess Popoalaea is said to have hidden from her cruel husband. Several times a year, the water turns red to mourn her murder at his hand.

How can you visit Hawaii without seeing some of the dancing native to the region? Enjoy one of the hula shows. Find phone numbers for local show times at www.mauihi.com. (Click on "What's Happening" under "Maui Events & Holidays.")

Indoor Fun

In case of bad weather, check out some of the wonderful indoor opportunities. Visit Maui Mall to see the Paper Airplane Museum. Those with an eye for the unusual should take a look at the Tin Can Man that resides there. Don't miss Hot Island Glass in the Upcountry. Visitors stand there for hours watching the award-winning Worcester family create beautiful glass decorations and sculptures.
