Taffeta is used in many types of women's formal wear.
Tafetta, named for the Persian word "taftah," can be traced to the 16th century, when the fine woven fabric was considered a luxury in women's wear. The crisp, silk or silk-like fabric is still used in an array of upscale fashions including ball gowns. Tissue taffeta, one of several varieties, is a plain weave with a fine cross-rib, both lightweight and transparent. Tissue taffeta is typically reserved for spring and summer fashions.

A classic taffeta wedding gown
Yarn-dyed tissue taffeta is popular for formal and evening weddings, for both bride and bridesmaid, especially in warm weather seasons and/or locales. Brides often choose taffeta for its crisp form, sophisticated look and silk-like finish. Wedding dresses may contain tissue taffeta solely along the full-bodied skirt, creating the iconic "poofy skirt" image, whereas bridesmaids dresses may be made entirely of tissue taffeta (typically with lining) or may have tissue taffeta beneath a fuller skirt.
Costumes
As dresses were elaborately crafted during the Victorian period, when great attention was paid to shape and details, tissue taffeta makes a great option for such period costumes. The variety of colors and styles allows for authentic-looking apparel at a fraction of the weight of the originals. Thus, actresses in elaborate attire remain cooler and less likely to visibly sweat or swoon.

A taffeta duvet cover puts an elegant, opulent finish to bedroom decor. Covers come in a variety of colors and are complemented by silk throw pillows and sateen sheets. Taffeta is cleaned only by spot- or dry-cleaning; oil based stains will be a challenge, regardless.
