Decorating a cake in a simple manner doesn't mean it will look plain and unimaginative. With simple ingredients and small decorative accents, you can make a cake worthy of any celebration. If you are a beginning cake decorator or just want to treat someone to a special surprise, first think about what kind of cake the recipient would appreciate. Consider that person's hobbies and interests and the design will follow. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Tropical Cake
Design a tropical-themed cake with purchased icing and a palm tree cake pan. Bake your basic cake recipe in a palm-shaped cake pan. These pans are found in many craft stores, gourmet shops and online cake supply shops.
Ice the palm fronds with green icing. To make the green icing, mix 1 small can of vanilla icing with 2 to 4 drops of green food coloring. Mix till the green is the desired shade. Mix a little vanilla icing with 2 purple drops and 2 red drops of food coloring to get brown, to spread onto the trunk of the palm tree. Cover the trunk and place on a platter lined with palm fronds.
White Fuzzy Cake
Spread a regular baked cake with white icing. Fill a plastic bag with more white icing and squeeze the icing to one end of the bag. Snip 1/4 inch off the end of the bag and use as a pastry bag.
Start squeezing small dots of white icing all over the cake. Start in one section and spread the dots all over the cake. Cover the entire cake with points of icing. This technique produces a fuzzy, puffy, airy-looking cake for a special occasion.
Worms and Dirt Cake
Bake a cake and ice with brown icing. To make the icing, combine a can of white vanilla icing and 2 drops of purple food coloring and 2 drops of red food coloring to get brown icing. Crush 2 cups of chocolate wafers and sprinkle on top of the cake.
Poke gummy worms into the icing so they look like they are coming out of the cake.
