Themes For House Parties

Throw a fun house party with a cool theme.

The next time that you throw a house party for your friends, don't simply plan a generic party. Come up with a theme that your decorations, food and even your guests' attire will revolve around. Think about themes that your friends will enjoy, but also something that complements yourself, and your hobbies and interests. Does this Spark an idea?

Costume Party

Halloween does not have to be the only time of the year that you can dress up. For people who love dressing up, consider throwing a costume party. You can ask your guests to dress up in any costume they want. Alternatively, come up with a costume theme that is a bit more specific. For example, ask your guests to dress as either pirates or wenches. You could also choose a decade and arrange the party from there. For example, throw a sock hop party and have your guests dress in 1950s attire. For a 1970s party, your guests could all dress as hippies.

Around-the-World Potluck

If you want to throw a dinner party at your home, consider planning a potluck dinner. However, rather than asking your guests to bring their favorite casseroles or pies, host an around-the-world potluck. Each guest chooses a type of cuisine to highlight in the dish they want to bring. For example, one person could bring a Mexican appetizer, another person could bring an Indian main dish and another guest could contribute a Greek dessert. Coordinate the dishes so that you don't have too many of one course or one type of cuisine. Your guests can make their dishes themselves, or bring takeout from a local restaurant. You and your guests will enjoy trying lots of different kinds of foods that you might not eat all the time.

Casino Night

Host a more adult version of game night with this house party. Rent some casino game tables from a local party rental store. Consider using poker tables, craps tables and blackjack tables. You can hire dealers for the night, or recruit some friends to take turns helping out. Your guests can play with their own money, or you can provide chips. The person with the most chips at the end of the night gets a prize.

Fundraiser

Consider throwing a cocktail party in your home to raise money for your favorite charity. Get all of your friends together for a night of drinks, appetizers and music. Place posters and pamphlets all around your home that educate your guests on the cause, such as animal cruelty, childhood hunger or a type of cancer. Your guests can make donations at the end of the night if they want to.
