Themes For A Summer Party

Celebrate summer with a theme party.

If the summer heat has gotten to you and you have nothing but time on your hands, energize yourself, your family and friends with a party. To make your event all the more interesting and exciting, plan it around a special theme. Turning the tables on the seasons, paying tribute to a particular decade and celebrating the warm summer sea are just a few of the endless possibilities. Does this Spark an idea?

Christmas in July

When the summer heat becomes unbearable, you may start wishing it was Christmas already. So, make it happen--if only for the duration of your party. Invite your guests to a "Christmas in July" party by sending invitations made out on traditional Christmas cards. Hold the party indoors or outdoors, but either way decorate with Christmas-themed decorations. For example, set out red and green Hawaiian leis or place some lawn chairs inside next to the fireplace with stockings hanging from the mantle. Dress up palm trees with Christmas decorations. Have a volunteer dress as a summer-time Santa. He can wear the traditional beard and Santa hat with a Hawaiian shirt and some red swimming trunks. Serve some chilled eggnog cocktails with sugar cookies for treats. Put Christmas twists on classic pool party games like Marco Polo--Santa Claus-O--and sing Christmas songs by the pool.

60s Beach Bums

One of the most popular things to come out of the 60s was the beach party movie. It usually involved a group of teenagers hanging out on the beach in bikinis and trunks and solving some mystery while listening to groovy rock 'n roll music. To decorate for this poolside theme party, gather up some colorful surfboards or boogie boards and place them next to the pool. Set out some towels and lounge chairs by the pool, as well. Tell everyone to come dressed in 60s summer fashions. Play some popular 60s music while everyone swims and dances. Nearing the end of the party, you can all sit around a bonfire or firepit and roast marshmallows.

Under the Sea

You can't think of summertime without thinking of the ocean. Style your party with an under-the-sea theme and decorate accordingly. For example, hang some fishermen's nets around the party space, from doorways and ceilings. Place some plastic fish inside the nets and cover light sources with blue cellophane to give the rooms an aqua color. Blow up some blue and green balloons with helium and let them float up to the ceiling. For refreshments, make everything ocean-themed. Eat seafood like grilled salmon or crab cakes and desserts made of blue or green gelatin. Play games that have a sea theme, like Piranha Ball. Players surround the inside perimeter of the pool and link hands. A ball floats in the middle of the pool and guests have to avoid getting touched by the piranha, though they can't break hands. Play some ocean trivia games, as well.
