Choose color inspiration from vibrant colors of the sea.
An inspiration for an under-the-sea bathroom can come from a photograph, the love of a hobby, your child's affinity for a cartoon character or simply the love of the colors nature paints an underwater landscape. Perhaps you've found an underwater themed shower curtain or bath accessories that you'd like to make the focal point of your bath. No matter the inspiration, you've got some options for designing your underwater retreat. Does this Spark an idea?
Tropical Sea Theme
Use the colors of coral and a tropical sea in your bath.
Using an undersea photograph as inspiration, choose wall colors that make you feel as if you have just descended under the waves into tropical seas of blended blues and greens. Once you've decided on a base color, ask your paint supply store to mix three shades of the same hue. The lightest is for your ceiling, making the room feel as if it's submerged. The darkest color will ground the sea when painted on the bottom 36 inches of your wall, and the medium shade will fill in the remaining wall space. Keep this palette light and tropical. Rugs for the space work well in blended shades of sea floor sand. Add a monochromatic shower curtain the same color as the center wall color, towels and accessories in shades of tropical coral and finish the room by hanging that inspiration photo on the wall in a natural coral frame.
Under the Sea Makeover
Hang wooden tropical fish on neutral walls for an easy theme transition.
In bathrooms that have sink, toilet and tub colors that may not lend to a sea-themed paint makeover, bring in your under sea idea by adding ready-made accessories available from home and decorating supply outlets. Paint walls a neutral color that will coordinate the existing ceramic fixture colors in your room and planned linens and accessories. Shades of sand, cream, white or even extremely pale gray blend easily with most existing fixtures. Bring in under-the-sea accessories, tastefully decorated with sea life, and hang brightly painted wooden tropical fish as if they are swimming along one focal point wall.
Something's Fishy
Make a whimsical under-the-sea themed bath for your kids.
For an under-the-sea bath that will be used by children, plan a fantasy underwater scene in your bath. Let the kids look up to see an undersea mural painted on the ceiling. Don't go overboard with the mural but make it enjoyable to paint the undersides of just a few brightly colored fish on a pale sea blue-green background. Hang tropical wooden fish from fishing line around a center light fixture or suspended as if they are swimming from one corner of your bath to destinations unknown. Hang the fish at different heights for interest.
Paint walls the same pale color as the ceiling, and use a roller or sea sponge to add in different shades of sea blues and greens. Keep the faux painting light and airy so it's not overwhelming. For this space a clear shower curtain decorated with whimsical tropical fish is appropriate. Complete the look with monochromatic solid color rugs and coordinating solid colored bath towels and vanity accessories. One of the predominant colors of your fish can be used as the color of your accessories. If your children are fans of sharks, manta rays, whales, or sea horses, by all means substitute that marine life for the tropical fish.
