In an autocratic management style, the management and the employees interact directly.


The autocratic management style uses a top-down approach. Authority and decision-making vest with the top management. Each employee carries on the share of work assigned to her. The management supervises the work of the subordinates and guides them throughout the process. There are many advantages to using the autocratic management style.


Clarity in Operations


The main advantage of an autocratic style of management is that there is clarity and lucidity in the way all operations are dealt with. The top management fixes the roles, responsibilities and duties of each worker in the company. There is no risk that an operation would fail because the employee misinterpreted his job. There is no ambiguity in the minds of the employees. Each employee knows very well what is expected of him.


Faster Response Times


The management is the one that makes all the decisions -- big and small. Therefore, the turnaround times are faster. The management does not consult with the employees for input and makes each decision as and when the need arises. The management is involved in all day-to-day transactions and understands the system very well. The autocratic management style works very well for small organizations and those that manufacture costly items. For example, a diamond merchant would do good business if she chooses this management style.


Elimination of Middlemen


In this management style, there is no place for middlemen and their interference. The employees report directly to the management. The management assigns each employee his share of the work. The employee approaches the management whenever in doubt. When there are many levels, confusion may arise in the minds of the employees. When orders pass through several levels, misinterpretation and miscommunication may creep in.


Higher Motivation


The efficiency and motivational levels of the employees are higher with this management style. The top management directly watches over the performances of all the employees. The employees are motivated and driven to perform well and catch the management's attention. When the owner of the business appreciates the performance of an employee; it often results in promotions and monetary incentives for her.
