The Best Fondant Cake Ideas

Fondant is fun to work with and requires no special skills.

There are three types of fondant: poured, rolled and sculpted. Poured fondant offers the most versatility, especially when combined with creativity and imagination. The options of what you can create are limitless. There are no special tools needed to work with poured fondant and there are no special skills required. Whether you make your own or purchase it ready-made, there's no reason to make boring cakes when you can create unique and memorable fondant desserts. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Poured Fondant Petit Fours

Petits fours are iced with poured fondant.

Petits fours are small squares of cake covered in poured fondant. Traditionally, they are layered and have some sort of filling between their layers, but you can make much easier petits fours. Simply bake a cake in a single layer pan, such as a 13 by 9 by 2-inch pan. When cake is completely cooled, cut into small squares. Place cut squares on wire rack and pour a light coating of heated apricot jam over them (the jam helps the fondant adhere properly). Spoon fondant over each piece. Decorate as desired or top with sea salt for an interesting flavor combination.

Poured Fondant Cupcakes

Cupcakes topped with poured fondant have an elegant look, which makes them perfect for special occasions such as weddings and showers. Start by spreading a scant coating of heated apricot jam on cupcake tops. Heat poured fondant in a microwave safe bowl, then dip cupcakes to frost them. Allow the frosting to set. Edible gum paste or even real flowers would complete the elegant look.

Cake Balls or Lollipops

Bake a cake in the flavor of your choice in a 13 by 9 by 2-inch cake pan. When completely cooled, crumble entire cake and add one 16-oz. can of cream cheese frosting. Mix thoroughly and shape into balls. Place onto parchment-lined cookie sheet and refrigerate for several hours. Insert lollipop sticks, if desired, then dip into heated fondant. Roll in sprinkles to decorate.

Shaped Cakes

Cut shapes from a cooled cake using cookie cutters. Pumpkins for Halloween, Christmas trees for the holidays, egg shapes for Easter and stars for the 4th of July can all be decorated appropriately using poured fondant. Just add food coloring to get your desired fondant colors and follow the same instructions for petits fours.
