Celebrate turning 10 with a special birthday party.
Turning 10 is a big milestone birthday for your child, so it's important that you throw them a special party to mark the occasion. Ten-year-olds are in that in-between, or 'tween" stage, no longer a young child but not yet a teenager, so choosing the right type of party can be a little tricky. Incorporate a theme that reflects your child's interests and, most importantly, make it lots of fun. Does this Spark an idea?
Scavenger Hunt
There are many variations of the scavenger hunt party and many locations where it can be done. You can incorporate themes like the Amazing Race, Jungle Safari, Day at the Mall or Pirate Treasure Hunt and choose locations like your neighborhood, a local park, a mall or your town. Divide children into groups and give them a list of 10 or more things to find or give them tasks to complete to get a clue to their next destination. This is a fun and action-packed event, and with a little planning, will be something they'll be talking about for a long time.
Luau
Create a tropical getaway in your own backyard, local park or even inside your home. Ask guests to wear tropical clothing, play some Hawaiian music and use lots of colorful decorations like leis, grass skirts, shells, coconuts and pineapples. Hold limbo and hula contests and incorporate the aloha theme into all of your games, activities and food. Kids can make leis, decorate flip flops or do other Hawaiian themed crafts. A luau makes a perfect theme for a beach or pool party.
Slumber Party
Every kid loves a sleepover. Invite your child's friends over and have an evening of fun activities planned. They can sleep in your living room or you can pitch a tent or two in the backyard. Rent movies, pop popcorn and have the kids make their own mini pizzas, bake cookies or make s'mores. Play boardgames, flashlight tag or other slumber party games. For girls, you can also do makeovers, paint their nails, create new hairstyles or do fun crafts.
Birthday Idol
Throw an American Idol, Rock Star or Movie Star themed birthday party. Decorate your house with a Hollywood theme. You can do a red carpet, V.I.P. passes, concession stand and photographers. Get a karaoke machine and let the kids have fun singing and entertaining. Hold a talent show or play theater games, like charades where they can practice their skills by acting out their favorite movie titles, actors or action heroes. Games with movie trivia, playing freeze dance or letting kids make their own movie shorts using a video camera are all fun and memorable activities.
