The Best Ways to Attach a Silk Flower to Hair
Silk flowers are an inexpensive and feminine way to dress up your hairstyle quickly. Whether you want to wear the flower behind your ear, on the top of your head or in your ponytail, there is a simply way to achieve this look. With a hot-glue gun, a silk flower and the hair accessory of your choice, you'll have a unique hair decoration in just a few minutes. Does this Spark an idea?
Making Silk-Flower Hair Accessories
Using a pair of wire cutters, cut the stem from a silk flower. Flatten or adjust the flower to your liking, as it will be difficult to do this once the flower has been attached to a hair accessory. Attach a 2- to 3-inch piece of ribbon, preferably one that's the same color as the flower, to the hair accessory of your choice. If you're using a hair elastic or a headband, wrap the ribbon around the elastic. With hair clips (which can be purchased at most craft stores) or thick bobby pins, wrap the ribbon around the upper clasp. It's not recommended to use regular bobby pins, as they can easily be bent and ruined.
Secure the ribbon to the hair accessory and back upon itself using hot glue or fabric glue (hot glue dries faster, but high-quality fabric glue will create a stronger hold). Once the glue has dried and you feel that the ribbon is well secured, secure the flower to the ribbon using hot glue or fabric glue.
If you're comfortable with a needle and thread, a few discreet stitches through the flower and the ribbon is a great way to reinforce the glue. If you're using a headband and would like to attach multiple flowers, simply repeat this process. If you're feeling particularly creative, you can add beaded accents to your silk flowers using the fabric glue (hot glue is too thick and will be very noticeable). If you choose to accent your flowers, use glue sparingly. You can always add more glue, but once too much glue is on the flower, it's going to leave a mark.
Wearing Silk-Flower Hair Accessories
There are many ways that you can wear silk flowers in your hair. Flowers can be pinned behind the ear to create an exotic look. Headbands provide a versatile way to wear silk flowers. You can attach just one large flower or several small ones to the headband. To add volume to your hairstyle, use an elastic headband (thin black elastic is best) over all of your hair, rather than underneath where it lies on your neck. (This is similar to how you would wear a boho headband.)
Once the headband is over your head, you can lift hair around the crown of your hair and spray with hairspray to add volume. If you prefer to wear your hair half up, you can put it up using an elastic with a silk flower attached, or you can use a regular elastic and a silk-flower hair clip.
