Pig Roast Activities For Children

A suckling pig is actually a piglet.

A pig roast is a summertime tradition for many families. The suckling pig is tender and provides a piece de resistance for any barbecue. Children should be included in the roast and can take part in learning prepare the pig and cook it. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Preparing the Pig

The preparation of the pig is an important part of the pig roast. The pig must be throughly cleaned and mounted correctly on the skewers. Depending on the recipe being used the inside of the pig is also stuffed with other food for cooking. The pig is then sewn up and grilled. Have the children prepare the pig under supervision. Each child can be given a specific step as the other children watch and learn. This teaches children a skill and gives the adults a bit of a break.

Cooking the Pig

While the cooking of the pig should not be done by children who are too young, children off all ages can still take part one way or another. Younger children can be told to guard the pig and be security officers making sure that other kids do not get too close to the hot BBQ. Older children can be charged with monitoring the pig's roast and adults can teach the kids roast the pig, where to place it and how intense the flame should be. The adults can teach the kids spot when the pig is done. Older kids can also be responsible for glazing the pig.

Pin the Apple on the Pig

Children of all ages can play a variety of pin the tail on the donkey. Use an illustration of an open mouthed pig being roasted and mount it on a cork board with tacks. Blindfold the child and have him pin a cardboard apple to the pig. The winners are the ones who successfully pin the apple to the pig's mouth.

Pig Roast Contest

Supply the kids with markers and paper. Have each child design a poster for the pig roast. This allows the children to be creative and lets them feel like they are contributing to the roast. "Have the guests judge the winner. Give the child who wins a costume pig snout as a prize. Display all the posters during the party.
