Plans to Build an Outdoor Tiki Bar
Building an outdoor Tiki bar for your home is much easier than you would think. Home bar plans are available online and even at Lowe's. Tiki home décor is fun to design and can be modified to adapt to winter months. A Tiki bar can serve food, fresh juices, and soft drinks as well as alcohol, making it a vacation destination for the whole family, without every having to leave home.
Lowe's
Lowe's publishes a quarterly magazine called "Lowe's Creative Ideas for Woodworkers" that has comprehensive details on home bar plans and other projects. They have published an article specifically about build Tiki bars, including a materials list and "how to" instructions. The Lowe's model is a bit like a Rocky Mountain Tiki bar with tin rather than a thatched roof and cedar to replace the bamboo. Even if you decide to use bamboo and thatch, use the basic plans of this version and you will find it easy to adapt and assemble.
Adaptable Plans
For those who have already made a bar and really do not feel like making another, but would really like the entire Pacific Island effect, it's easy to build an outdoor Tiki bar. Adapt the bar that you already have, especially if for only one event, by adding simulated thatch to the roof and wrap the bar with bamboo trim or even the bamboo mats. With the basics in place, you can further dress the bar with additional Tiki home décor like mini palms, brightly colored patio lights, solar-powered Tiki torches, bamboo furniture and brightly colored flowers. For an authentic look, add carved wooden Tiki masks and sculptures for effect.
Indoor/Outdoor
Make your home bar plans adaptable and portable. In the summer months, you can place a 6 foot, homemade Tiki bar outside on the patio or deck, dress the roof with simulated thatch that will protect the roof structure and the bar itself, and wrap the base with bamboo mats. The bigger the size of the bamboo strung together in the mats, the more authentic the effect. You can paint a colorful Tiki design on the exterior rim of the bat and for an extremely effective Tiki look, either carve the posts supporting the thatch roof, or make them broad enough to hang carved masks from the Pacific Islands. A bar like this is small enough to pick up and move inside, especially when made with a detachable roof, and attractive enough to enhance your décor.
