Pirate Swimming Party Ideas

Pirate Swimming Party Ideas

Why throw a regular pool party when you could throw the pirate version? Everyone knows pirates had more fun on water than just about any other historical subculture. So grab your bandannas, some coconuts and walk the plank into one of the best pool parties you'll experience. Does this Spark an idea?

History

The classical type of pirates that are so often depicted in books and movies are those that looted and plundered in the Caribbean from about 1560 until sometime in the 1720s. The legend of these pirates lived on in stories such as "Peter Pan," which first emerged in the early 1900s. More recently, movies such as "Pirates of the Caribbean" popularized pirate culture even more.

Features

Create invitations for the party on parchment paper (which is sold in most paper stores). Write them with a calligraphy pen and draw a simple map to the location with an "X" marking the spot. Request that participants come dressed in at least partial pirate attire. This could mean wearing a bandanna on their heads or sticking to a red, black and striped scheme in their bathing suits.

Considerations

Serve the guests tropical drinks such as pina coladas, or virgin coconut drinks if they are under 21. Don't bother to serve more than appetizers (which would be best if they were sea food). If the party continues into the night, strings of outdoor lighting would definitely add to the decor. Invest in any pirate themed pool toys, such as floating drink holders or inflatable ships if you have the resources.

Potential

There is great potential for various types of pirate-related games. One idea is placing a strong plank of wood across one side of the pool to the next. Have an adult test out its strength before allowing others to balance across it, and be sure to never allow more than one person on at a time. Hiding treasures to create pirate scavenger hunts both within and outside of the pool can be great fun.

Warning

Be absolutely certain that there is always at least one sober adult watching over the festivities. If you are an inexperienced swimmer, stay away from food or alcohol before going in the water. Not everyone can swim as well as the rest, and there are dangers in trying to fetch items at the bottom of the pool or hurting yourself while walking the plank.
