Penny Carnival Games

Fill a jar with pennies for a carnival guessing game.

The penny can be used in a few carnival games. When planning a carnival for a party or fundraiser, consider creating games that use pennies. Keep the guests interested in the games by awarding a small prize to all winners. With several pennies, creativity and some game ideas, you have everything you need to get started.

Penny Guess

For an easy game, fill a clear jar with pennies. Count each penny so you know how many are in the jar. Have each player write down her name and a guess as to how many pennies she thinks are in the jar. At the end of the carnival, announce the winner. Award a prize or the jar of pennies to the game winner.

Pail Penny Toss

Place six pails on the ground, one behind one another in a line. Label the pails with the numbers one through six. Mark a line six feet from the first pail. Give each player six pennies. The players must toss the first penny in the first pail, second penny in the second pail and so on. If a player makes a penny in all six pails, he wins a prize. For younger children, play the game using three pails and three pennies.

Penny Tic-Tac-Toe

Use rope, tape or sidewalk chalk to draw a tic-tac-toe grid on the ground. Mark a line six feet from the grid. Give one player pennies and another player nickels. The players must take turns tossing the coins onto the grid. The first player to land a tic-tac-toe wins the game and a prize.

Penny Hunt

Fill a small plastic swimming pool with play sand and several pennies. Have two players at a time bend down on their knees by the outside of the pool. When you say "Go," the players must start searching for pennies. The player who finds five pennies first wins the game. For another variation, set a timer for 30 seconds and the player who finds the most pennies in 30 seconds wins the game.

Penny Dot Toss

Paint dots, about 2 inches in diameter, all over a sheet. Have players stand 10 feet from the sheet and try to toss pennies on the dots. If a player lands a penny on a dot, she wins a prize. Another idea is to paint three different sized dots, such as 1-inch, 2-inch and 3-inch dots. Award a small prize to any player who lands a penny on a 3-inch dot, a medium prize to any player who lands on a 2-inch dot and a large prize to any player who lands on a 1-inch dot.
