Mexican Restaurants In Waikiki Hawaii

Hidden among the hotels in Waikiki are some delectable Mexican restaurants.

The words Waikiki and Hawaii typically stir up images of warm sands being kissed by ocean waves, surfers challenging those waves and sun worshipers strolling by in barely-there bikinis. As far as food, seafood and Asian-style restaurants usually top the list of where to go when you feel that familiar tummy rumble. Though not as plentiful as other restaurants, there are a few Mexican eateries, besides the ever-present Taco Bell, within easy walking distance of Waikiki Beach.

Maui Tacos Waikiki

Located in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center and only a block from the sands of Waikiki, Maui Tacos is a casual, family-friendly restaurant. Part of an international chain, Maui Tacos has outlets on three major islands. This is Mexican food with an island twist. Tacos are available with grilled fish or with smoky, shredded kalua pork. Taco salads include choices with mango salsa and fresh fish. Special Maui Mex bowls offer a taste of the Philippines, combining chicken adobo with rice and black beans. The Mexican dessert, fried ice cream, has grated coconut in the crust. A more traditional menu is available, as is a children's selection. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Senor Frog's

Another international chain that has taken root in Waikiki is the whimsical Senor Frog's. This combined restaurant and nightclub does get a bit crazy later in the evening. Live bands and karaoke nights are part of the fun. Dine inside or on the open-air patio. The menu can only be described as eclectic. Along with the typical Mexican fare is a concoction called the Fish Ceviche Margarita. It is basically marinated fresh fish in a salad served in a margarita glass, complete with a salted rim. Tadpole burgers are mini hamburgers served with chips. The beef or chicken Big Ass Quesadilla is just that. It's a large flour tortilla stuffed with goodies served as an appetizer to share, or not. Located in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center just a block from the beach, Senor Frog's is open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 4 a.m.

Pocho's Healthy Mexican

Pocho's is a low-key Mexican restaurant only three blocks from the beach, on Kuhio Avenue. It's on the northern end of Waikiki, close to hotels such as the Maile Sky Court and the Courtyard by Marriott at Waikiki. All tacos and burritos are soft shelled, filled with beef, chicken or beans with sides of homemade salsa. Traditional quesadillas, nachos, enchiladas are offered. One specialty is the Pork Adobado Burrito that combines Phillipino adobo spiced pork with beans, cheese, onions and tomatoes. Chicken taco salads, without the fried shells, are also offered. This is one of the least expensive restaurants in Waikiki with menu items less than $10, as of 2011. Pocho's is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Dine in, take out or take advantage of the restaurant's free delivery service within Waikiki.

Moose McGillicuddy's Pub & Caf

True, Moose McGillicudy's Pub & Cafe has a reputation, at least locally, of being a party hot spot. It is a combination sports bar, nightclub and restaurant with nightly happy hours that can get a bit lively. But along with the burgers, steaks and sandwiches are some authentic Mexican selections. Chips, salsa, nachos and quesadillas populate the appetizer menu. Both nachos and quesadillas may be ordered with shredded smoked kalua pork, adding a Hawaiian flair. Steak or chicken fajitas are offered, sliced bits of either with sides of vegetables, salsa and warm tortillas to wrap everything in. Tacos are also on the menu with steak, chicken, kalua pork or fish. Located on Lewers about two blocks from the beach, Moose is open from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Starting at 7 p.m. each evening, drink specials are offered including half price and dollar drink nights.
