Winter Potluck Ideas

Squash is a delicious winter side dish that can be enjoyed at your next winter potluck.

Winter potlucks can be a good opportunity to meet together with family and friends during the coldest months of the year. These potlucks also give you chance to showcase your favorite winter or holiday recipes. Tailor your potluck dish or beverage to fit with the season by choosing warm comfort foods. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Soups, Stews or Chili

Soups, stews or chili are perfect additions to a winter potluck. When it is cold outside, people tend to gravitate towards warm dishes. Homemade chicken noodle soup and clam chowder are popular soups. The great thing about soups is that you can throw them into a slow-cooker and leave them all day while they simmer. Add a side dish of bread sticks or warm rolls, and the dish will be the first one finished at the potluck.

Beverages

Bring hot chocolate, mulled apple cider or other spicy drinks. Heat the drink so that it is too hot to drink before leaving to the potluck. By the time you arrive at your destination the drink should be cooled down enough for drinking. You may also consider putting the hot drink into a thermos to keep it hot throughout the evening. Just remember to bring insulated cups or mugs instead of regular paper cups to avoid burnt hands.

Desserts

People who attend a winter potluck are sure to be on the lookout for rich winter desserts. There are hundreds of recipes for winter cookies, cakes, pies, pudding, and brownies. Showcase your favorite holiday dessert recipe or try a new favorite. Avoid cooler desserts like ice cream or Popsicles. Sugar cookies, fudge, or bread pudding are bound to be a hit. Similarly, use the leftover pumpkin or fruits from your garden to create a warm pie. Serve the pie with a small scoop of whipped cream.

Winter Vegetables

Most vegetable side dishes are welcome at a winter potluck. But if you are truly going for a winter-themed side dish, choose a winter vegetable. There are many side dishes that call for winter squash or zucchini. Green-bean side dishes are also a perfect addition to any winter potluck. A vegetable side dish may not be the talk of the potluck, but party goers will be grateful that someone thought to bring something healthy.
