Sweet 16 Party Planning List

Planning a Sweet 16 Party can ensure a teen's special day is one to be remembered.

Many teenagers wish for an elaborate party for their sixteenth birthday. While most families are unable to provide the expensive, and at times over the top, parties, sweet 16 celebrations can still be lavish by working within a budget. Throwing the perfect party takes much time and planning to ensure that you miss no detail and that the Sweet 16 is the most memorable party a teen will remember. Does this Spark an idea?

Budget

Always consider the budget of the party first. With 16 being the driving age in most states, many teens would like a car at their party, which can play a role in how big of a budget they will have. Teens and parents will need to decide what factors are most important and what they can sacrifice, or when to find a less expensive alternative. If decorations are a key factor, the family can choose to make the cakes and refreshments. Or if a teen prefers a lavish location, she may choose to forgo additional decorations in favor of the location's decor. Knowing the budget before the planning begins is key, as it can keep teens from being disappointed and also help determine which factors are most important.

Theme

After deciding on a budget, a teen must then decide if they want to have a theme party or just a general get-together. For girls who are into fashion, a party with a fashion show or makeover theme can go over well with guests. Boys who want to have a party for their birthday without making a big deal out of it may choose to select a group of friends to attend a sporting event. Parties with both male and female guests could have a theme such as the 80s, movie star couples or a formal, black tie event. Regardless of the theme, the party should reflect the interests of the individual who is celebrating the birthday.

Location and Decorations

Both the location of the party and the decorations will depend on the party's theme and budget. Parents can choose to rent a venue such as a hotel meeting room or a party room as a restaurant. Others may choose to have their Sweet 16 party at home to allocate costs to other areas. Additional options could include a skating rink, beaches, sporting events and country clubs. Once the location is determined, choosing decorations can begin. If the party is being hosted in a venue such as a restaurant or a country club, minimal decorations will be needed. A meeting room at a hotel or a person's home can be transformed into a completely different location with extensive decorations. Also, if a parent is planning to surprise the child with a gift such as a car, choosing a location that provides easy access to a parking lot or open area for the presentation is recommended.
