The Smith Corona SL740 is an electric typewriter for business or personal use.
The Smith Corona SL electric typewriters were better known by their series name: Spellmate. The Spellmate series came in 500 and 700 series models, but all Smith Corona SL models operate in the same way. A single Smith Corona Spellmate manual includes instructions for all the SL series typewriters. If you don't have a copy of the manual and you'd like one, it's widely available online.
Instructions
1. Make sure the typewriter is plugged in and the power is off.
2. Pull the keyboard cover off and lift the sound shield to check for a ribbon cassette. If there isn't one, insert a cassette onto the empty carrier, tilt the sound shield back into place, then snap the keyboard cover into the tabs at the top of the typewriter. The keyboard cover doubles as a paper support.
3. Turn the typewriter on and wait for the carrier to align itself, then place a sheet of paper against the paper alignment line on the top of the machine. Press Code + Left Shift and the typewriter will automatically load the paper.
4. Press Code + Z to run a self-demonstration, if desired. This will print a list of the typewriter's main features.
5. Type your document. Use either the "Index Up/Down" key, the paper release lever, the platen knob or the Return key to move the paper as needed.
6. Eject the paper when the page end warning sounds or when you're finished with your document. To eject, press Code + Right Shift. The platen knob may continue to rotate after the paper has been ejected.
7. Adjust the volume of the page alerts by pressing Code + V until you hear the sound level you want. You can also mute the volume this way. The medium default volume is reset every time the typewriter is turned off.
8. Place the typewriter in "Standby" mode, located near the power switch, when you're finished. You can also turn the power off, but custom settings like sound will reset to defaults.
