Sweet 16 Birthday Cake Design Ideas

Design a cake that exemplifies the importance of turning 16.

In North America, turning 16 represents the transformation from childhood to adulthood. In many states, it is the time when teens get their driver's license and enter the "age of consent." Although Sweet 16 birthday parties are usually organized for girls, Celebrate With Style reports that sometimes boys' families request party planning for the milestone event. Everything including the cake needs to be special. Choose a cake design that reflects Sweet 16 traditions, popular culture or one that your son or daughter desires. Does this Spark an idea?

Sixteen Candles

In a documentary called "Don't You Forget About Me" (2009), teens discussed that they appreciated John Hughes' movies from the '80s and felt they could relate more to them than present-day films. One of the films Hughes directed was "Sixteen Candles." If your daughter is a fan of this movie, consider making a cake similar to the one from the film. Make a simple one-layer cake covered with pink or white icing. Completely cover the sides of the cake with icing frills. Top it with sixteen white, elegant candles. If your daughter has a boyfriend, he can bring it out to her, just like Jake (Michael Schoeffling) brought the birthday cake out to Samantha (Molly Ringwald).

Candle Ceremony

A traditional practice for a Sweet 16 celebration is a candle ceremony with 16 candles, says Sweet 16 Party Ideas. Generally the first candle is for parents, the second candle is for brothers, sisters or grandparents, the next four candles are for other family members, the next nine are for friends, where one is distinguished as the candle for her best friend, and the last candle is for a boyfriend or close male friend. Design a three tiered cake. The top layer can hold four candles for the parents, best friend, boyfriend and sibling to light. The second layer can hold candles for other family members to light. The third layer can hold the candles for her friends to light. Before singing "Happy Birthday," have the candle ceremony where all the candles are lit. If you do not want to use a tiered-cake, surround a simple cake with 16 votive candles.

Car Cake

Make a car cake for your son or daughter who cannot wait to get behind the wheel and who is planning on getting his license right away. Try to design the cake to look like his dream car. Either make it yourself or ask a specialty baker to make one. If trying it yourself, bake two layers of cake in 9-by 13-inch sheet pans and bake the rest of the batter in a muffin pan. Use one of the baked layers for the base of the car; cut the other layer to form the roof of the car. Assemble and cover with butter cream icing. Use fondant to cover the cake in a color that your teen likes. Cover the muffin-shaped pieces with black fondant for wheels. Add doors, windows and decals with other colored pieces of fondant.

Hobby Cake

Make a cake that represents your teen's talents and passions to show that you are proud of her coming-of-age accomplishments. If your son likes to play rugby, make a rugby ball. If your daughter likes to play music, make a guitar-shaped cake. If he is a budding writer, make a book or typewriter cake; if she wants to be a lawyer, top the cake with the scales of justice.
