The beaches of Tahiti
Situated in the South Pacific Ocean, Tahiti is the largest of the Windward Islands and is part of the French Polynesia territory. This island was first settled by European colonists in the 18th century and has a heavy European influence, with French being the island's official language. Tahiti is renowned for its overwater huts, indigenous otea dancing and black sand beaches. Mountain climbing opportunities are available on nearby Mont Orohena, French Polynesia's highest peak.
