Rhode Island Sports For Kids

There are many social, personal and health benefits from youth sports.


Participating in youth sports helps build an appreciation for health and fitness. Being part of a team is great for building self-esteem, offers an opportunity for socialization and helps children and youth learn responsibility. For health, it aids in weight loss and maintenance, coordination, strength and helps fight against heart disease. Rhode Island has a number of opportunities for young people to participate in sports.


Park and Recreation Resources


City park and recreation departments are a great resource for youth sporting activities. Some parks and recreation departments, like the one in Cranston, offer training and participation in a variety of sports, group lessons, and leagues, including baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, football, cheerleading, ice hockey, wrestling, bowling, track, cross-country, swimming and boxing. Many of these activities start for children as young as three years of age and go up to youth 18 years of age.


Sports Camps


Summer sports camps are good not only for helping youth develop good sportsmanship but may also make a significant impact on their lives. These camps are good for introducing a sport to your child or allowing them to hone or master skills they already have in a particular sport. Cities throughout Rhode Island like North Providence offer summer sports camps like the Ernie DiGregorio basketball camp. Camps will generally run for a chosen amount of hours during the morning or afternoon and will be age specific. Other camp types include gymnastics, swimming, soccer, basketball and football.


Indoor Sporting Establishments


Establishments like Teamworks in Warwick offer a variety of youth sports in an indoor climate-controlled setting. Group activities include soccer, baseball, basketball, flag football and a general sports class that allows children to try several sports. Participating in activities like these encourages sportsmanship, helps with motor-skills development and keeps kids in shape.


Baseball and Softball Leagues


Baseball and softball lessons and teams help in building baseball skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship for girls and boys. Baseball leagues like Little League start with tee ball for children ages four to six, and go up to big league for ages 16 to18 who demonstrate skills at an appropriate level. Rhode Island has a number of these leagues.
