This can be turned to your advantage if you're putting together a play list for a summer barbecue, are DJing at an outdoor summer party, or simply wish to reminisce about the hazy summer days of the '90s. Summer hits from the '90s are sure to bring back memories to anyone who lived through them.
Los Del Rio - "Macarena (Bayside Boys Remix)"
Originally released as a rumba tune by Los Del Rio in 1993, "Macarena" quickly spread in popularity to Spanish-speaking parts of the globe, often being remixed for local markets. The most famous of these is the 1996 Bayside Boys Remix which added English lyrics and a sample of Yaz's "Situation." It topped the Billboard 100 for three months in 1996 and was the best-selling single of the year. The track is perhaps best known for its distinctive dance routine, which became so popular at the time that it was even performed by Al Gore at the 1996 Democratic National Convention.
Kris Kross - "Jump"
"Jump" was the debut single by Kris Kross and topped the Billboard charts for eight weeks between April and June 1992. Kris Kross were two children from Atlanta: Mac Daddy, who was 13 when this song became a hit, and Daddy Mac who was 12. Kris Kross had a strong rivalry with another child band, Another Bad Creation (ABC), and the start of "Jump" sees a short excerpt from ABC's "Playground" before a scratch effect kicks in and "Jump" starts. "Jump" was also the first hit written by Jermaine Dupri, who later produced number-one singles for Usher, Monica and Mariah Carey.
Ricky Martin - "Livin' la Vida Loca"
"Livin' la Vida Loca" topped the Billboard charts for five weeks between May and June 1999 and was the tenth best-selling single in the U.S. that year. "Livin' la Vida Loca" is notable not only as the being one of the first songs to cross over from the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart to mainstream pop airplay but it was also the first Billboard chart-topper to be recorded with the Pro Tools software package, rather than in a traditional recording studio. The song was later covered by Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas on the soundtrack of "Shrek 2."
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - "Summertime"
"Summertime" was the first single released by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince after The Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith, had started appearing in the T.V. sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." It reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped both the Hot R&B Tracks and Hot Rap Singles at the same time. The song itself is based on a lengthy sample of Kool & The Gang's "Summer Madness" and details The Fresh Prince's idea of a perfect summer day, from getting a new haircut to going to a barbecue. The song was remixed and rereleased in 1998 but failed to chart.
