The Best Places To Snorkel In Maui

Many beaches in Maui allow you to walk right into a snorkeling area.

Maui is home to more than 15 well known snorkeling locations, all offering a different snorkel experiences. In addition to those locations, you can snorkel directly off just about any beach in Maui. Several companies offer guided boat tours for snorkeling if you are looking for something a bit more organized.

Olowalu

Olowala is located 10 minutes south of Lahaina in western Maui. This snorkel spot has a coral reef to explore. The water is shallow and easy for snorkelers of any skill level. Park by the mile marker 14 sign, then follow the paths of sand to the water. The whole day can easily be spent exploring the acres of coral reef. It tends to be slightly cloudy near the coast, but the water clears up a little further in. Bring your own snorkel equipment because there are no facilities to rent snorkel gear nearby. There is not much of a beach in this location either; all of the action is in the water, not on the shore. Watch for thorns from the surrounding trees.

Ulua Beach

Ulua Beach is located just a short walk away from the Keawakapu Beach in southern Maui. The access road is found between the Wailea Elua and the Renaissance Hotel. This is a popular location for snorkelers, diving groups and sunbathers. It is home to a variety of sea life, including yellow tangs, puffer fish, humuhumus, goat fish, moray eels, parrotfish and octopus, just to name a few. The sandy bottom makes for easy entry, and once you are in the water you can enjoy all the yellow, blue, orange and green hues that color the coral canyons and cliffs.

Kaanapali Beach, Black Rock

Black Rock is located on the north end of Kaanapali beach next to the Sheraton Hotel in Kaanapali (Maui's west side). Many people consider this the best location for snorkeling in all of Maui. The dividing point between Kaanapali beach and Kahekili makes a popular wall dive location for snorkelers. It is beginner- and intermediate level-friendly. You are likely to spot an octopus or turtle at this location, and night diving is popular as well. Equipment rentals are available nearby. Access to showers is available along the beach.
