Senior Daycare Party Ideas

Throwing a party at a senior daycare center encourages socialization.

Senior daycare, or adult daycare, is a program designed to care for the elderly while their caregivers are at work or otherwise occupied. There are approximately 4,000 senior daycare programs operating in the United States. Typically, there are three types of adult daycare: those that have an emphasis on social interaction, those that focus on the medical needs of the senior, and those that are designed to handle Alzheimer's patients. Throwing a party can be great fun and will break up the monotony for both seniors and staff alike. Does this Spark an idea?

Dancing with the Staff

In a small twist on the popular "Dancing with the Stars" TV program, a party can be organized for the senior daycare center. Planning for this party can span a week or more as the dance partners (one staff member matched with one senior) practice their moves for the ultimate dance-off on the day of the party. Judging and prizes can be awarded to add a little of the spice of competition to the festivities. Dances can be modified so that even those who are wheelchair-bound can participate. Family members of the senior participants can be invited to watch as audience members to encourage their participation in the occasion.

PJ Party

A pajama party is another way to break up the day-to-day grind. Everyone should be encouraged to come dressed in their best pajamas, including staff members. Select a film everyone is likely to enjoy and show it during the party, along with serving popcorn and pretzels. If there is a great storyteller on the staff, encourage them to prepare a "bedtime" story for the party. Milk and cookies should, of course, be provided for story time. As another activity, consider turning the lights off and encourage everyone to tell their favorite ghost stories.

Senior Prom

Bring back the days of high school proms by throwing a fancy senior prom. Planning can begin a few weeks in advance. Organize decorating committees, collect everyone's favorite music choices and create a team who will provide refreshments. Contact a local vintage or consignment shop and see if they would be willing to loan out some gowns for the occasion. Encourage everyone to come dressed in their very best. At any age, it's always nice to have a reason to dress up from time to time. During the day of the prom, vote on who should be named senior prom king and queen. End the party with a round-table discussion where everyone gets a chance to share their favorite prom memories.
