Turning 40 Birthday Themes

Use fake graveyard headstones to decorate for a humorous 40th party.

A 40th birthday is a big milestone, and people should celebrate moving into another decade. When hosting a party for a loved one or friend who is turning 40, create a party theme he will enjoy. Party supplies, a creative imagination and a few theme ideas are all you need to get the party started. Does this Spark an idea?

No. 40 Party

Create a number party by having all the decorations and party supplies say "40." Print the No. 40 and write the party details in the number as invitations. For added decoration, glue the No. "40" confetti and stickers to the party invitations. Use the No. "40" for the cake. Have the cake made or use a "4" and a "0" cake pan. Decorate the party area with large "40" signs and posters. Create a veggie tray by laying the carrots and celery in the shape of the No. "40." Use party tableware that has the No. "40" wrote all over it. Have the birthday guest of honor wear a shirt with "40" printed on the front and back.

Hawaiian Luau

Turn your back yard into the perfect luau for your friend or loved one's 40th birthday. Decorate the party area with inflated beach toys, beach balls, sunscreen, tiki torches, coconuts, beach towels, toy fish and beach pails. Print "40" on card stock and cut it out. Tape or glue the number "40" to coconuts, centerpieces, beach balls and balloons. Use beach towels as tablecloths and sand-filled beach pails for centerpieces, as well as balloon bouquet weights.

All-black 40th Party

For a birthday guest of honor with a sense of humor, plan an all-black 40th party. Have all the party guests wear black. Decorate the party area with fake gravestones and over-the-hill signs. Create signs that say, "Lordy, Lordy, Look Who's 40" and "Here Lies the Youth of _______ on Her 40th Birthday." Use all black and silver party decorations. Have the cake made to look like a graveyard. Black flowers, black balloons and black-colored foods are perfect for an over-the-hill theme.

Surprise Party

Plan a surprise party for the guest of honor by keeping his big party a secret from him. Get with all his friends and family to plan a party location. Be sure the location is somewhere guests can hide their cars. Have his friends and family help you make a CD or MP3 list of his favorite songs. Prepare his favorite foods and drinks for the party. For added fun, gather as many pictures as you can from his past 40 years and create a slide show, scrapbook or memory board to display at the party.
